KING RAIL FINALLY

After five years I was beginning to doubt if I would ever see a recluse King Rail much less have a photo opportunity. Seeing a bird and coming away with a picture are two different things. His head was in view as he strode through the dense vegetation allowing for only head shots. Unbelievably the rascal walked into an opening allowing for a wonderful photo opportunity. Even more than I could imagine. It was surprising the picture came out due to my shaking. Being in the right place at the right time and with a lot of luck surely helps. :)

Little Blue blues?

A White Ibis out on a limb.

The Roseate Spoonbill was keeping an eye on me as I crept up as close as I could.

THE NOSE KNOWS

My camera usually doesn't take pictures of anything without feathers however I thought I would share this picture taken yesterday of my friend's Setter patiently holding a point on some Quail. Her leg was quivering but still she held the point. It made you want to grab your shotgun and wait for the explosion coming from the underbrush.

YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS

It was really special seeing the Yellow-headed Blackbirds out in numbers today at the Farmer's Rice Mill in Lake Charles.

Even though I have seen many YHBBs it still plays tricks on my mind when I see one.

Regardless, seeing is believing and you gotta appreciate these guys.

COYOTES HANGING OUT

Ran across twelve Coyotes on a fencepost (two not pictured) in Carlyss on Glover Road today (3/8/14). I'm not sure if Coyotes will now avoid this area or if they were just 'hanging out' but if I were a Coyote I would stay away.

GADWALL

Waterfowl in general are some striking, colorful birds and the Grey Duck doesn't fall short in that area.
